Description

The 1997 4 coin gold proof Britannia set was issued by the Royal Mint to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Britannia series. The 10th anniversary design by Philip Nathan depicts Britannia standing proudly with her trident, on a chariot with two horses. Queen Elizabeth II's third portrait can be seen on the obverse, designed by Raphael Maklouf. All 4 coins are made of 22 carat gold, and are housed in their original Royal Mint presentation case, with a certificate of authenticity. The 1997 4 coin gold proof Britannia set is one of the more desirable gold proof Britannia sets to be issued by the Royal Mint. For many years, the Royal Mint had wanted to create a modern day British gold bullion coin, one that would rival the newly issued US gold Eagle, as well as the Chinese Panda, Canadian Maple and South African Krugerrand. The first gold Britannia was issued by the Royal Mint in 1987. The Britannia series features a gold one ounce, half ounce, quarter ounce and one tenth ounce Britannias, all made from 22 carat gold.
