Queen Elizabeth II Brilliant Uncirculated sovereigns were first produced in 1957, and could be purchased from high street banks and gold bullion dealers. Sovereigns have been produced most years through the Queen’s reign, with the exception of a few years. The first gold sovereign issued depicting Queen Elizabeth II was the 1953 Proof. This was a special strike, and is an incredibly rare sovereign. Since 2000, a Brilliant Uncirculated gold sovereign has been issued by the Royal Mint each year, alongside a proof example. Most sovereigns issued during the reign of Queen Elizabeth II depict Benedetto Pistrucci’s famous portrayal of St George and the dragon on the reverse of the coin.
